Sun Hats that are useful for wearing in the garden.

When buying a hat for sun protection it is vital that it protects you from the UV rays and that this protection is for the places that suffer from sun exposure most when you are working in the garden. Remember that some fabrics let UV rays through so they are not giving you adequate UV protection as you work in the garden. Thinner fabrics will provide minimal sun protection so it is best to buy a hat that is sold as providing protection against the sun.

A Wide Brim Hat for gardening.

A wide brimmed sun hat is a good investment for wearing in the garden as it protects more of the vulnerable areas of the head, face and neck from the sun. Make sure that as well as liking the style you buy a sun hat that has fabric that provides adequate protection. There are sun hats available that offer the 'best of both worlds' in that they look good and will also protect you from the sun. It is therefore a good idea to select one that states its level of UV protection for your own peace of mind.

Sun Exposure has now become a 'hot topic' as being one of the causes of skin cancer. Leading dermatologists and skin cancer experts frequently offer warning about exposing the skin to UV rays without sun protection.

There are two ways to protect the skin, one is to cover it up with a suitable fabric that has UV resistant properties and the other is to use sun protection lotions on the skin. Still this does not protect the top of the head and this is where a good sun protection sun hat can provide vital sun protection.

Hats for Sun Protection, hats that are suitable for men and women

Any gardener will know that there are times when you are just going to step into the garden/yard for a few moments to see what jobs need doing the next day. While you are out in the garden you decide to go to look at the rose that is flowering for the first time this year, you notice a area that has weeds sprouting, you decide that you just have to move that self-sown seedling. Two hours later you step back into the house, you are hot, tired and thirsty and maybe you have just a little bit of sunburn. That may not matter if it happens once or twice but the time you are in the sun without protection clocks up and form some unfortunate people this may cause them skin problems at a later date.

The places that suffer from exposure to the sun when you are gardening most are your ears, your nose, the back of your neck and surprisingly though not if you think about it the top of your head. Other uncovered areas of your body also need protection with suitable clothing or sun protection lotion, and it may be worth asking your optician about suitable sunglasses for you to wear.

The lotions we wear on the beach can be a bit sticky for working outdoors in the garden/yard, it is easier to wear a sun lotion that is one of the modern formulas that you cannot feel on the skins surface. I use Riemann P20 when gardening at home on the coast of England if you live further south or in hotter climate a higher protection factor may be necessary.

The sun hat you choose to wear will need to suit you and to fit comfortably or you will be reluctant to wear it day to day. Ladies may prefer a sun hat in a feminine colour or a classic shade that will match whatever they are wearing. Men's sun hats come in a variety of styles but they should remember if they are tempted by a baseball cap style that the back of their neck will be exposed to the sun when they are gardening. There are mens' sun hats which have a flap of fabric at the back to protect the nape of the neck from the sun.

Even with a sun hat and sun protection lotion it is wise to avoid exposure to the sun when it is at its most intense, that is usually the hours around mid-day.

2uesday~Add the Scala Lanikai sunhat to your Amazon list. Hands down this is the best sun hat I've owned. These hats have a wide brim, SPF 50, they can fold up and be stowed in a backpack or bag, and when the hat brim hits a branch your hat doesn't go flying off your head.

Hi, this reminded me of my mother who always wore a hat whilst gardening, it was similar to the ones above but she always made us wear the hats that looked like the Foriegn legion hats! they had a flap down the back of the neck, we always felt so stupid at the time, but it is a brilliant idea. nice one. cheers nell

Thank you WildIris - I will search for the hat you recommend and add it here.

Hi Nell - well done your mother she was ahead of her time and was protecting you too. No wonder your skin looks so good in your photos now. Thank you.

Thank you samsons, I was interested in this as I usually do wear a sun hat in the garden but think I should make sure in future I get one with a higher SPF.

Thank you LillyGrillzit for reading and for your comment.

Hi Micky - I am hoping that you wear a good quality cycle helmet most days but even so you should use sun protection lotion.

We have a friend who is being treated for skin cancer probably from day to day sun exposure in the UK so it is a subject I thought would be good to remind people about. Thanks Micky nice to see you here.
