Firstly what is romance ?

Most people probably have their own ideas about romance and romantic words and gestures.

Can the word romance mean different things to different people?

Most likely yes, it is probably best for a couple to evolve together what they consider to be romantic gestures and words. Favourite romantic words for some might sound like cliches to others.

Courtship could be considered an out of date idea in the modern world, but it played an important role in the past and we could learn something about how to be romantic from the concept of courtship.

Courtship was a way that a gentleman would set about winning a ladies heart. This is often featured in fairy tales but it was and can be present in real life to.

To court a lady a gentleman, paid her special attention, this could be in the from of gifts such as flowers,jewellery, personal gifts such as tokens of love. giving a love spoon he had carved especially for her.

For anyone struggling with the concept -

The essence of romance is about how you feel about a person and letting them know why they are special to you. It is creating a special atmosphere/mood with words,events or gestures.

You can be romantic without being in love and you can be in love without being romantic; but the two things usually go together.

Most of the words to do with romance are to do with being in love or feeling something special for someone.

"Ask yourself what are they asking for?"

Do they want reassurance -that you love them, that you find them attractive, are they seeking a sign of commitment, or are they wanting to make a date a special occasion that will lift it into being a memorable occasion.

Romance has not been deliberately swept aside in relationships but in the modern world it is often difficult to remember to find the time to write a letter or even a message in a card to tell someone how much they mean to you.

Saying "I love you."  or even writing it is always going to be more difficult the first time when you  may be unsure of the other person's response.  

If you are unsure about saying "I love you" then it might be best to wait just a little longer until you can say those three words with confidence, and try to  read the signs that the other person is giving you to judge what their response will be.  

However if you are 'head- over heels' and crazy about someone then waiting to say it might not happen - you might just say it one day when you least expect to.
