Why use a re-usable shopping bags, instead of a carrier bag? Eco-friendly shopping bags and grocery totes

By

Re-usable shopping bags and totes some great designs are here

Re-usable bags are so much easier to carry than carrier bags as well as better for the environment.

Plastic carrier bags if we thought about it we would never need them or use them. They are just so handy when you have forgotten to bring a bag with you that day. The down-side is as well as being bad for the environment they are difficult to carry and have a tendency to split open and spill out the contents.

It is easy to forget to take re-usable bags with you when you are shopping. You have either left them in the car or at home. If the bags are designed to either fit into your pocket or handbag or are attractive enough to carry along side your hand-bag would it make the number of plastic bags you needed to use in a year less?

Here are some ideas to buy re-usable bags on-line, there are some Eco-friendly ones and they come in an attractive range of designs.

Why are Plastic Carrier bags not a good idea?

Why are plastic bags so bad?

About 13billion plastic bags are given free in the UK every year. That means 13 billion carrier bags a year are eventually waste to be disposed of.

Plastic carrier bags can take hundreds of years to break down they are not biodegrade.

Plastic carrier bags break down into smaller and smaller toxic bits that contaminate the soil, waterways, oceans etc.

Plastic bags can end up as litter on beaches, streets and in the countryside

Plastic bags in the ocean become a hazard, marine animals mistake plastic bags or parts of plastic bags for food like plankton or jellyfish and swallow them.

Why should anyone care about what bag they put their shopping in? A couple of plastic bags here and there does not seem to make much difference does it? Well it does if you work out how many bags it adds up to over a year or two. If we think about what plastic carrier bags are made from and how the quantity we use in a year adds up and is using up a valuable resource. It is easier to get into the habit of taking our own re-usable bags to the shop with us instead of relying on plastic carrier bags than it might seem.

It makes sense to use re-usable bags for practical reasons too they are stronger than plastic carrier bags and easier to carry goods in. You can chose a style that suits you and the type of shopping you want to use the bags for, after all when did you see a plastic carrier bag with side pockets?

Ways to encourage the use of re-usable bags when shopping.

The easiest way to get into the habit of using re-usable fabric bags is to make sure you keep a supply of re-usable bags by the door at home, so that you will see them when you go to walk out of the door.

Keeping some useful shopping bags in the car is also a good way to make sure you have not forgotten to take your own bags when you are shopping.

  • Take a bag with you in your coat pocket or in your handbag . A light-weight fabric bag that folds-up small to fit in your pocket or handbag bag is a great idea for those small impulse purchases.

Pretty soon taking your own shopping bags to the store and using your own bags becomes second nature to you.

Some will say it makes no difference to the environment and that steps like this are too small to make any difference. My response to such comments would be that we have to try to do what you can and to do something is better than to do nothing at all. If we all try to be responsible in the simple daily things we do such as not using plastic bags for grocery shopping , then together we might just make a difference.

On this page are ideas for the type of re-usable shopping bags you can buy or how to make them. It does not matter where you buy them or what style suits you best as long as you use them. Supermarkets and shops know we need to stop using up the resources that go into making plastic carrier bags they know that using them is not good for their image that is why they are selling alternatives to them at the check-outs.

Making your own re-usable bag is easy... to do .. here is how to make your own shopping bag from fabric.

If you want to be re-cycle as well - you can always make your own re-usable bags from a piece of furnishing fabric, left over off cuts or curtains that you have become tired of will work well. It is simple to make your own re-usable bag here is how to -

  1. Cut two matching squares or rectangles of fabric. (The size of the bag you want to make + seam allowances).
  2. Stitch up three sides - (you can stitch along the seams twice to strengthen them if you want to).
  3. Next turn over and neaten the top edge ( the one that remains open)
  4. Now all you need to do is to stitch on two handles - then your home made re-cycled fabric re-usable shopper is made and ready to use.

If you want to you can make the handles out of an old belt cut in half and stitched onto the bag or a length of webbing fabric, a piece of thick rope or just two lengths of suitable fabric stitched together.

What is so bad about old carrier bags ?

In the past people would use a cotton or string bags for carrying their shopping. Then in the 1960's and 70's thin plastic became available to be used as carrier bags. At the time this seemed like a good idea, they were cheap, hygienic and light to carry.

  • Plastic carrier bags cause landfill site problems because they take so long to break down.
  • The process for making plastic carrier bags uses fossil fuel resources; derived from oil. Oil is a limited resource.
  • Plastic carrier bags cause litter problems when they are discarded. When plastic carrier bags become litter they are a danger to wildlife.
  • Plastic carrier bags are a danger to marine animals.

People dump rubbish by the shoreline and plastic bags can be carried out to sea.

  • Plastic carrier bags can cause the a death of marine wildlife. A white, almost transparent carrier bag looks like a jelly fish which looks like food to some marine creatures. to eat Whales and sea mammals can swallow the plastic carrier bag thinking it is food. The bag causes the creatures death by blocking its digestive system, it may starve to death.

hi LillyGrillzit and thank you,

Thank you tracykarl99 - me too and once you start to use them you find that they are easier to carry than the awful plastic bags that are so easily split.

Hi Micky - Do you get the cycle race - Tour de France on TV there I wonder? I watch some of it here on TV. The parts where they cycle over the mountains has fantastic scenery. I beleive the event is in its one hundreth year this time. Thank you Micky.

hi AC when I first started to use re-usable bags I would get to the shop and find I had left them at home. Now I have a selection of them tucked inside one bag that hangs up near the door as a reminder. I sometimes use the ones that fold up small as they are good for putting in coat pockets. Thanks for reading and leaving a comment here.

well done hub, here in the US, we've seen progressive cities like San Francisco put partial bans on plastic bags. I'd love to see this extended across the whole of the US

Thank you LRCBlogger here in the UK you could say it is a mixed bag as some shops are trying to encourage customers to use re-usable bags but still supply plastic carriers either free or at a small charge. Some shops have started to use bags made of paper. I had one bag which was made from an old newspaper made into a carrier bag which was unusual.

I think the important change will come when people change their habits because they know how important this small change is. I will continue to try to encourage the use of these bags and I am trying to think of ways to promote the idea. I find the re-usable bags easier to use than the plastic ones but the difficult part is to remember to take them with you when you go out. Leaving some in the car and also near the door of the house helps to remind us. Thanks a lot for your comment LRC Blogger.

Unfortunately still lots and lots of people use plastic bags here in the UK in my opinion. The big corporations, as supermarkets should be in a leading role and just stop offering plastic bags, but that is at least a decade away I think, and it could be too late?!

Hi 2uesday-quite a few years ago the govt here imposed a tax on plastic bags..now about 13c per bag,it adds up...so people are much more inclined to use re-usables.Great hub as always.

2uesday 21 months ago

Hi itakins, lots of the shops here encourage the use of re-usable bags and offer them for sale. Only one or two shops refuse to give bags away and sell them, it would be nice if the ones that did that gave the money to an environmental charity fund. I try to remember my bags and probably have reduced the amount I use by at least 90%. When I do need to use a carrier bag, is when I feel guilty, now I know the effect of the plastic carrier bags. Thanks for reading and the comment.

Hey 2uesday, I have a bunch of carrier bags in my trunk--if I could just remember to take them into the store with me I wouldn't have to keep buying them. =:)

2uesday 21 months ago

Hi Winsome - I know that feeling, they are handed out free in most shops here but I am reluctant to use plastic carrier bags now I know the facts. The more times I use my re-usable bags the more it seems to get programmed into my mind to remember to take them when I am shopping. I too have days though when I am at the check-out before I realise I have forgotten to take them into the store. :) Now who can invent a way around that problem?

Winsome 21 months ago

Ok 2uesday, how about these: Maybe a stencil for the parking spaces saying "Bring your bag, save the environment" or the store offers a special for those who bring their own bag. The manufacturers could get in on it by offering their own "coupon" on the bag which is scanned rather than clipped. =:)

They sound like good ideas to me - hope they happen soon. In the UK We have a 'mixed bag' of how the shops approach the subject of cutting down on the handing out of free plastic carrier bags.

Some shops no longer give free plastic carriers so you pay if you want one, some shops use paper bags were possible, another supermarket counts up how many bags you have saved by using your own and gives you points on a loyalty card. Some of my re-usable bags were sold by shops at a low price to promote the use of the bags - the shops name is on the side of the bag so they get publicity too.

The car park marking idea is really good and so is the bag with a coupon on it. Thanks for taking an interest and replying.
