The English Lake District.

The English Lake District area is a place of outstanding natural beauty, which makes it a popular place for tourists to visit both from the UK and from over-seas. It is a ideal area to visit for walkers, climbers as well as those who enjoy more sedate holiday past-times. The tourist information offices in this area are full of useful information and advice on how to spend your time here to get a holiday that suits you.

The Lake District is a mountainous region, which helps to create the wonderful scenery here, the mountains here are called fells. This is England's largest national park and as such the landscape is protected from unsuitable developments to keep the character and beauty of the place. The English Lake District extends 50km from north to south and 40km from east to west.

'Strange names for things' in the Lake District.

These Lake District names came from the past, the Norse settlers.

The Lakes, names for things and what they mean.

  • thwaite - clearing
  • tarn - lake
  • gill -gorge
  • dale- valley
  • beck - stream

Features of the English Lake District.

White Cottages.

Many homeowners in the Lake District area paint their cottages white because this is traditional. In the past houses and farms where treated with red lead which then had lime-wash applied over it (to keep out the damp) this turns white.

Dry stone walls.

Dry stone walls divide up the farms and clear the fields of stones. The land above the highest wall is the open fell.

Lime Kilns.

Lime is made from heating limestone, it was used on the acidic soils to improve the farmlands fertility. Field kilns were built close to where lime was needed.

Herdwick sheep

Cope well with the Lake District’s extreme conditions the sheep grazing, affects the landscape and without the sheep the fells would be covered in trees and scrub.

Walking in the Lake District is a popular pastime ...from the fells you can see the scenery for miles..
