Anne Frank's Diaries were saved by Miep Gies

This article is about Miep Gies who saved the diaries of Anne Frank from being lost when the Frank family were discovered in hiding and were arrested. Prior to this she had been one of the people who had helped the family to survive in hiding. Anne frank's diary has become world famous. Less well known are Anne's other writings which are now kept in a museum.

Miep Gies.

Miep Gies was one of the people who helped to hide Anne Frank and her family in Amsterdam from 1942 to 1944..

She was also the woman who became the guardian of Anne Frank's diary and papers.

Anne Frank's written account (her diary) has become one of the most well known written accounts of the war it was published first in 1947 and has been translated into many languages and the story it tells has been made into documentaries and a prize winning film.

Miep Gies lived to be one hundred and during her life time helped Anne and her family hide away from the Nazis. She was also the woman who hid Anne Frank's diaries away so that they were safe from destruction.

Miep Gies was an employee of Anne Frank's father. She was one of the people who helped to supply food to the family while they were hidden in annex above the family business in Amsterdam. Anne and seven others were hidden for two years, from 1942 to 1944. Anne Frank's diary account is one of the most famous records of the Holocaust.

When the family were arrested Mrs Gies had collected Anne's papers for safe keeping and had locked them away, in the hope that one day she would be able to give them back to her . Mrs Gies, kept Anne's written account safe until the war was over.

She returned them to Otto Frank, who survived the war, she also helped him compile the papers into a diary published in 1947.

Anne the reader and the writer.

Anne kept other note book journals apart from the famous diary.

One of them she called the "Book of Nice Sentences". In this book she copied her favourite sentences from the books she was reading. Writers such as Shakespeare, John Galsworthy, Goethe and from biographies of Florence Nightingale, painter Rubens, and the composer Franz Liszt are referred to.

Anne read Dutch, German, and some English.

The information about Anne's journals comes from reading information at the link (right). .

Anne Frank. The Writer. The Unfinished Story.

Otto Frank. Anne Frank's father...

Otto Frank , Anne's father was the only member of the family to survive the Holocaust.

Anne Frank died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp three months before her 16th birthday. Margot, 19 her sister also died there and their mother Edith died at Auschwitz.

Miep Gies was not able to hand Anne's papers back to Ann as she had hoped but instead returned them to her father Otto Frank.

Otto Frank lived with Mr and Mrs Gies for a time after he returned.

The diaries were first published in the Netherlands in 1947 in an abridged version.

“Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl” .

The building in Amsterdam which the family hid in has become a museum.

Miep Gies.

Miep Gies was born Feb. 15, 1909. ..her name was Hermine Santrouschitz, her family were from Vienna.

When she was 11, she was sent to Leiden and a Dutch family there cared for and later adopted her. She was given the Dutch nickname Miep . This was because Austrian children were suffering from food shortages as a result of World War I.

In her memoir Miep Gies writes about how she felt when she read Anne Frank's diary.

(Reading it, was not something that she did at the time when she rescued it from the annexe, when the Frank family and their friends were taken away by the Gestapo). She felt that it was not her right to read the child's diary at that time.

This is what Miep Gies says in her memoir about reading the diary:

"The emptiness in my heart was eased. So much had been lost, but now Anne’s voice would never be lost. My young friend had left a remarkable legacy to the world."

Miep Gies shows the bookcase that hid the annexe that the Frank family took refuge in...in this she speaks in her native Dutch language.

I heard on this mornings news that Miep Gies had died aged one hundred and thought I wanted to know more about her. When I read about how she helped saved Anne Frank's diaries I thought it would make an interesting page. It must have taken a lot of courage to help the family and then hide the diaries. Thank you for reading and leaving a comment itakins.

very interesting article 2uesday. i read the book and saw the film during the 60's I think but I did not know anything about the person who saved the diaries. how's the weather there now - it is minus 8 here today. Outside at the smoking gazebo which I frequent we talk about the cold and the lack of shelter for us. We have a roof and no sides - city bylaw. Sides not allowed. that will make you quit smoking - but it doesn't. Sorry I digress.

Thanks D.A.L. for reading and leaving a comment, I guess when I hear something like this on the news it makes me stop and think about their bravery and how they were once ordinary people but have now become part of history.

Hi Donna, no snow here but snowing elsewhere, and cold by our standards. We have same law in UK and also Italy and I think Ireland... Greece so far- no, last summer still people smoking in resturants.

Hi 2uesday,

Miep Gies was indeed a remarkable woman, and I was thrilled to see your article about her. She had a spine made of steel and a heart made of gold, didn't she?

Her bravery made it possible for many generations hence to experience (and, more important, never forget) the atrocities of that horrific time--all from Anne's unique perspective.

A nice tribute to a deserving and heroic lady. Well done!

I've always been inspired by the story of Anne Frank, but didn't really know anything about how the diary was saved. Miep Gies was a heroine herself!

Rose I think you are right Miep Gies was a heroine - helping the Frank family while they were in hiding and then hiding the diaries must have taken a lot of courage. Thank you for reading and leaving a comment.

thank you tipperary, pleased you found this interesting. The link on this page takes you to a great site where they have details of her journals, diary and other writing, that too will have links to other Anne Frank information. I linked to that one because it was good to see the books in her own handwriting. Nice to meet you tipperary.

This Hub truely touched my heart. I had read the Diary Of Anne Frank when I was in 5th grade, and the memory has stayed with me. So I have watched movies about her, and the Holocost as an adult. But I never knew about the journal she kept of nice sentences. Such a tragic cast to human history can't ever really be softened, but knowing that people like you are still keeping the memories alive, and sparking interest in others helps me to believe people as a whole WILL always remember, and never let it happen again. And thank you so much for giving insight about the marvelous woman who was able to keep Anne's writtings safe. She had to have been a very couragous woman, and faithful friend on many, many levels.

hi Cathi, I wrote this hub shortly after hearing about the death of Miep Gies and the role she had played in Anne Frank's life. I had not heard her story before. I thought it very moving that she had continued to tell Anne's story over the years. When I saw the link about Anne's other writings it made me wonder if she had survived her time in the concentration camp what she might have achieved with her writing. Thank you Cathi, for taking the time to write such a interesting and thoughful comment.

Thank you so much Cathi for letting me know this hub has been useful to you. The link in the blue square - takes you to a 'museum' that has Anne Frank's journals that Miep Guies saved. It is always nice to read your comments - and worth writing this hub if someone like you finds it useful.
